Acomb Beech

One of a number of impressive Beech trees to be found in this piece of private woodland in Acomb. (Access footpath to the side)

Growing long before the Douglas fir that in the main surround them these trees have been allowed to grow old gracefully and like this specimen have all the characteristics of veteran trees , moss on trunk, impressive burring, hollows and dead wood in the crown.

It would appear that many if not all of these Beech where at one time and I would suggest more than a hundred years previously been managed as Pollards, with the now striking branch formations, testimony to that fact.

Our Aim

The aim of this project is to identify, map and celebrate Ancient, veteran, heritage and notable trees across the regions of Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland. By so doing we will help to conserve and protect these trees for generations to come and enable our children and indeed our children’s children to also enjoy the pleasure and benefits that they provide.
