Really difficult times and unable to get out and measure those trees, but it is however an opportunity for a bit of research!!

The poet GK Chesterton wrote a song inspired by the actions of Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood. The Admiral, was known for walking across his fields in the College valley with his dog Bounce scattering acorns in order to ensure the British Navy would have a continued supply of timber for ship construction in the future. Traditional ship building techniques however where revolutionised shortly after his death, and those trees never harvested, ensuring that this oak tree legacy has survived to this day.

Information on the song , related Scottish dance and a recent recording of the song can be found here..

Our Aim

The aim of this project is to identify, map and celebrate Ancient, veteran, heritage and notable trees across the regions of Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland. By so doing we will help to conserve and protect these trees for generations to come and enable our children and indeed our children’s children to also enjoy the pleasure and benefits that they provide.
