Did you know that the Tree councils National tree week began in 1973 with that slogan “Plant a tree in 73” and was a response at the time to the ravages of Dutch Elm disease which sadly devastated and transformed the landscape of this country.

It is with a touch of irony in our COVID world that trees today are also now faced with unprecedented  threats from an increasing range of  pests and diseases. This coupled with mans desire for progress and change has and indeed continues to have devastating consequences for our tree population.

A lesson learned from this project is that actually “progress” has always had its part to play, and the trees we are discovering are so often the survivor’s of a bumpy journey. With this thought in mind we will be selecting  a tree each day through national tree week and endeavour to tell its special story and links to the past.

Our Aim

The aim of this project is to identify, map and celebrate Ancient, veteran, heritage and notable trees across the regions of Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland. By so doing we will help to conserve and protect these trees for generations to come and enable our children and indeed our children’s children to also enjoy the pleasure and benefits that they provide.
